The Water of Youth


... むかしむかし、やま の ふもと の ちいさな むら に、おじいさん と おばあさん が すんで いました。
mukashimukashi , yama no fumoto no chiisana mura ni , ojiisan to obaasan ga sunde imashita .
Once upon a time, in a village at the bottom of a small mountain, lived an old man and an old woman.
おじいさん の しごと は、すみやき です。
ojiisan no shigoto ha , sumiyaki desu .
The old man's profession was to make charcoal.
やま の き を きって、すみ を やいて たわら に つめて、ちかく の まち ヘ うり に いくのです。
yama no ki wo kitte , sumi wo yaite tawara ni tsumete , chikaku no machi he uri ni ikunodesu .
The old man's job was to cut the wood, burn it, load it into a straw bag, then take it to the village to sell.
でも おじいさん は、このごろ とし を とって しごと が つらく なりました。
demo ojiisan ha , konogoro toshi wo totte shigoto ga tsuraku narimashita .
But the old man was getting on in years and found his work too hot for his liking.
「ああ、こし は まがるし、め は しょぼしょぼ するし。・・・いや に なって しもうたなあ」
aa , koshi ha magarushi , me ha shoboshobo surushi .... iya ni natte shimoutanaa
"Oh, how my back is bent and my eyes bleary and swollen . …How disagreeable this work has become "
その ひ も おじいさん は すみだわら を かつい で、ヨタヨタ と やま を おりはじめました。
sono hi mo ojiisan ha sumidawara wo katsui de , yotayota to yama wo orihajimemashita .
The old man threw his straw bag of charcoal over his shoulders, and unsteadily descended down from the mountain.
とても あつい ひ だった ので、のど が カラカラ に かわきます。
totemo atsui hi datta node , nodo ga karakara ni kawakimasu
Since it was a very hot day his mouth became dry with thirst.
ふと みると、みちばた に つきでた いわ から、きれいな みず が チョロチョロ と ふきだして いました。
futo miruto , michibata ni tsukideta iwa kara , kireina mizu ga chorochoro to fukidashite imashita .
By chance, he happened to notice a stream of water trickling out of a rock sitting by the side of the road.
「こいつは、ありがたい」
( koitsuha , arigatai )
"This is a welcome surprise."
おじいさん は、その つめたい みず を のみました。
ojiisan ha , sono tsumetai mizu wo nomimashita .
The old man then ,went over and drank from the cold stream.
とても おいしい みず です。
totemo oishii mizu desu .
The water was so refreshing.
「ああ、うまかった。なんだか こし が シャン と のびた よう だぞ」
( aa , umakatta . nandaka koshi ga shan to nobita you dazo )
"Oh, how delicious that was. And somehow my back seems to have become straight."
おじいさん は みず の おかげ で げんき が でた の だと おもい、ふかく かんがえ も せず に やま を おりて いえ へ かえって きました。
ojiisan ha mizu no okage de genki ga deta no dato omoi , fukaku kangae mo sezu ni yama wo orite ie he kaette kimashita .
The old man thought that somehow the water had made him young again, but didn’t think to deeply about it, and carried on down the mountain back home.
「ばあさんや、かえったよ」
( baasanya , kaettayo )
"Old lady, I'm home! "
「おや、はやかった ですね。おじいさん・・・！」
( oya , hayakatta desune . ojiisan ...!)
"Why, you are so early. OLD MAN ...! "
おばあさん は ビックリ。
obaasan ha bikkuri .
She shouted with amazement .
め を パチパチ させて、おじいさん を みあげ ました。
me wo pachipachi sasete , ojiisan wo miage mashita .
She blinked to see if her eyes were deceiving her.
いいえ、おじいさん では なく、そこ に いた のは おばあさん が およめ に きた ころ の、あの ころ の わかい おじいさん でした。
iie , ojiisan deha naku , soko ni ita noha obaasan ga oyome ni kita koro no , ano koro no wakai ojiisan deshita .
But no, the man standing before her was no longer old ,but the image of the young man that she first knew when she married him.
「・・・わたし は、ゆめ でも みているんじゃあ、ないでしょうかね」
(... watashi ha , yume demo miteirunjaa , naideshoukane )
"Am I dreaming? It can't be."
おじいさん も おばあさん に いわれて はじめて、じぶん が わかがえって いる こと に きづきました。
ojiisan mo obaasan ni iwarete hajimete , jibun ga wakagaette iru koto ni kidukimashita .
After his wife told him of these facts, the old man also noticed the change.

「わかがえり の みず と いう のが あると きいて いたが、それでは あれ が その みず だったんだな」
( wakagaeri no mizu to iu noga aruto kiite itaga , soredeha are ga sono mizu dattandana )
"I had heard stories of The Water of Youth, and now I know that the water I drank must have been that ."
おじいさん は いわ から ふきだして いた、きれいな つめたい みず の こと を おばあさん に はなして きかせました。
ojiisan ha iwa kara fukidashite ita , kireina tsumetai mizu no koto wo obaasan ni hanashite kikasemashita .
The old man then told his wife about the pure, cold water that he found trickling out of the rock .
「まあ、そんな けっこう な みず が あるんなら、わたし も いって いただいて きましょう」
( maa , sonna kekkou na mizu ga arunnara , watashi mo itte itadaite kimashou )
"If such wonderful water exists, then I must go and sample some too ."
おばあさん は そう いって、つぎ の ひ さっそく やま へ でかけて いきました。
obaasan ha sou itte , tsugi no hi sassoku yama he dekakete ikimashita .
After saying so, the old man's wife went out at once and headed off in the direction of the mountains.
おじいさん は おばあさん が さぞかし わかく きれい に なって かえってくる だろう と、たのしみ に して まって いました。
ojiisan ha obaasan ga sazokashi wakaku kirei ni natte kaettekuru darou to , tanoshimi ni shite matte imashita .
The old man waited at home, looking forward to seeing his wife come home, surely beautiful and young again.
ところ が ひる に なっても、よる に なっても、おばあさん は かえって きません。
tokoro ga hiru ni nattemo , yoru ni nattemo , obaasan ha kaette kimasen .
However, day and night came but his wife did not return.
おじいさん は しんぱい に なって、むら の ひと と やま へ さがし に いきました。
ojiisan ha shinpai ni natte , mura no hito to yama he sagashi ni ikimashita .
The old man became worried and decided ,with the aid of a villager to go and look for her in the mountains.
でも、おばあさん は いません。
demo , obaasan ha imasen .
But, his wife could not be found,
「いったい、どこ へ いって しまったん だろうなあ？」
( ittai , doko he itte shimattan darounaa ?)
“Where in heaven's name could she have got to?"
「キツネ に ばかされて、やまおく へ つれていかれて しまった のと ちがうか？」
( kitsune ni bakasarete , yamaoku he tsureteikarete shimatta noto chigauka ?)
"Maybe she has been tricked by a fox and been taken deep into the mountains ?"
みんな が はなしあって いる と、
minna ga hanashiatte iru to ,
While they were discussing this.
「オギャー、オギャー」
( ogya^ , ogya^ )
"Whaaa, whaaa"
と、そば の くさむら の なか から、あかんぼう の なきごえ が きこえて きました。
to , soba no kusamura no naka kara , akanbou no nakigoe ga kikoete kimashita .
A baby's crying could be heard from in the grass .
おじいさん が ちかづいて みると、おばあさん の きもの を きた あかちゃん が、かお を まっか に して なきじゃくって いました。
ojiisan ga chikaduite miruto , obaasan no kimono wo kita akachan ga , kao wo makka ni shite nakijakutte imashita .
When the old man approached the sound, there he found a red faced baby wearing his wife's clothes, crying it's eyes out.
「・・・ばか だなあ、ばあさん の やつ。のみすぎて あかんぼう に なって しもうた」
(... baka danaa , baasan no yatsu . nomisugite akanbou ni natte shimouta )
"...What a stupid fool you've been old lady. You've gone and drunk too much and become a baby -- "
しかたがない ので、おじいさん は あかんぼう を だいて いえ へ かえりました。
shikataganai node , ojiisan ha akanbou wo daite ie he kaerimashita .
Since he had no choice, he picked up the baby and took it back home.
